Automatic Watch Winders

An automatic watch winder is a useful accessory for the upkeep and display of automatic and self-winding watches.

An automatic watch winder keeps watches wound-up and running when not being worn.

This ingenious device contains an internal electric motor that rotates watches in a circular motion to mimic the natural wrist movement. This rotation keeps your automatic watch wound-up and ready-to-go when you need it. This is especially useful if you do not wear your watch every day, or if your watch has complex functions such as a perpetual calendar or moon phases.

In addition to winding the watch so it is ready to go, it is important to keep an automatic watch wound–up and running so the lubricants inside the watch will not congeal—which reduces the accuracy of the watch. Many watch winders have built in electronic timers that use pre-programmed sequences that rotate the watch clockwise, counterclockwise, and bi-directionally to avoid over winding.  

Automatic watch winders are usually made of plastic or wood.   Many of the finest winders are made of beautifully grained wood or burl wood that rival the most expensive jewelry boxes.   Popular finishes include cherry, mahogany, burl, and black lacquer.   In addition to the fine finishes, most watch winder boxes have a clear glass cover or window so you can see the rotating watch.

You can get units that hold only one watch, or multi-watch units that hold eight or more watches.   Watch winders vary greatly in price. Entry level winders can be purchased for as little as $29 on sale and as much as $3,000.00 for top of the line premium cases at some online retailers.
